The evaluation process begins with an initial consultation between the psychologist and the parents or young adult being evaluated. During this one hour meeting, we discuss background information, review medical and educational records, and explore presenting concerns. Parents and teachers will be asked to complete questionnaires detailing everyday functioning. We will use this information to discuss initial impressions and suggest a plan for evaluation.
A pediatric neuropsychological evaluation includes an assessment of the major areas of functioning including intellectual development, attention, executive functioning, learning & memory, motor skills, visual perception, language development, and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. The areas assessed are customized based on an evaluation plan jointly designed by you and the psychologist. We also perform an in-depth assessment of academic skills during the evaluation when needed.
What kind of problems require pediatric neuropsychological assessment ? Children and young adults with medical disorders that affect neurological development or functioning will typically benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation. This includes seizures, Autism, genetic disorders, very premature birth, and other conditions affecting the brain. Individuals who are struggling with learning and achieving educational success can also benefit from the in-depth assessment and cognitive skill profiling of neuropsychological testing.
Childhood disorders result in different profiles of strengths and weaknesses. Comprehensive testing can help identify a child's disorder and the areas of the brain involved. For example, testing can differentiate between causes of a language problem such as speech sound production, Autism Spectrum Disorder, shyness, developmental delay, or difficulty understanding or communicating using language. We may collaborate with your physician when appropriate to combine the results with medical testing to help diagnose your child's problem.
Do you accept insurance for a Pediatric Neuropsychological Evaluation? Our clinic is an out-of-network provider. That means that clients are responsible for the full fee for services. If you have out-of-network benefits with your insurance company you may be able to re-coup some of the evaluation cost after the fact. Working outside of insurance networks allows us to use our full discretion when planning your child's care.
How are the evaluation results shared with me? A feedback appointment is scheduled approximately two to three weeks after testing during which the results are explained in clear and thorough terms to parents. It is a priority that parents leave the feedback session with a solid understanding of why their child is experiencing problems, the child's strengths, and a plan for moving forward with treatment. We provide a comprehensive written report detailing the findings, diagnosis, and recommendations shortly after the feedback appointment. We pride ourselves on easy-to-read reports that use clear language and avoid jargon. This report can be shared with school and medical providers to coordinate care. Reports are designed to be useful for schools in their educational planning process and draw from our deep experience working in and consulting to schools. We work with teens and young adults who require standardized testing accommodations for the SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT, and GRE.
Autism Evaluation
We provide a range of evaluations focusing on Autism. This includes:
Evaluations for adults or emerging adults with developmental disability who require transition services and/or OPWDD entry
Children and teens who may have been missed for Autism
Adults who are self-referred for an Autism diagnosis
For our clients who have developmental disabilities or are seeking intensive supports through their school district, we use the ADOS-2 along with a cognitive measure, record review, and in-depth interviewing of parents. For older teens 18+ and adults who are exploring Autism for themselves, we can support with a virtual evaluation that emphasizes lived experience and utilizes the MIGDAS.
Dyslexia Evaluation
We offer a focused evaluation to identify dyslexia. This evaluation is ideal for children, teens, and young adults who are functioning well in school except for difficulties in learning to read or underperformance in reading. With our dyslexia evaluation, we provide in-depth testing of reading and spelling skills at the word and text level, along with testing of the specific language skills that are linked to dyslexia and reading delay. The evaluation report will discuss the findings and provide a treatment plan for addressing dyslexia in school and at home.
