Dyslexia Evaluation

Evaluation for Dyslexia

Dyslexia affects up to 1 in 5 people! We offer a targeted evaluation of reading, writing, and language skills to identify dyslexia for ages 6 through adulthood. Whether you need special education for your child or work accommodations for yourself, we can help.

This evaluation is perfect for people whose concerns are limited to reading or writing. If you’re worried about dyslexia AND other things like focus, social skills, behavior, and/or emotional wellbeing then check out our neuropsychological evaluation.

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disorder that affects learning to read at the single-word level. People with dyslexia have trouble processing the small sounds that make up spoken language. This causes a struggle with pairing symbols (letters) with the small sounds within words. Reading and spelling words is slow to develop or may not develop at all without specialized teaching methods. People with milder forms of dyslexia may notice that they read slowly, are fatigued by reading, and struggle with tasks that involve writing and editing.

Because dyslexia is so common, we created a streamlined evaluation that looks directly at the component skills of reading and writing along with the oral language skills that we know lead to dyslexia. We begin with a 30-minute consultation with the psychologist where you will share your or your child’s history with reading and writing. The in-office appointment is approximately two to two-and-a-half hours. A few weeks later we wrap up with another consultation to review the findings and make a plan.

We provide written documentation detailing the scores, diagnosis, and recommendations shortly after the feedback appointment. We pride ourselves on easy-to-read reports that use clear language and avoid jargon. This report can be shared with school and medical providers to coordinate care. Reports are designed to be useful for schools in their educational planning process and draw from our deep experience working in and consulting to schools.
